Back in November I went on a Caribbean cruise for Thanksgiving with the in-laws. It had its good points - fun times with the family, glorious sunny beaches and so on but the cruise itself was godawful. I made it pretty clear what I thought of Royal Caribbean in the questionnaire they left in my room. I told them that I wasn't especially surprised to find the cruise tacky, the food mediocre and the entertainment so eye-stabbingly terrible that even an audience beamed directly from a Sixties edition of the Black and White Minstrel Show would have been disappointed by the quality.
All of that I was sort of expecting but what really rankled was the desperate, money-grabbing Royal Caribbean made at every turn. It really jarred with the, equally irritating, nothing-is-too-much-trouble sycophancy of the staff. The true attitude is 'nothing-is-too-much-trouble-that'll-be-ten-dollars-and-don't-forget-to-tip'. Maybe it's my Britishness but I found the whole thing... I think the word I'm looking for is undignified.
I told them so pretty bluntly on my questionnaire.
Imagine my surprise, then, to return home this evening to find a mailshot from Royal Caribbean proclaiming "Shane, it's your year..." and then inside: "As someone who's cruised before, you'll already know that no other holiday offers so much to see and do..."
Hmm, they really didn't get the message did they?
